About the book

In 2004 Encyclopedia Universalis published a series of books called “Le Tour du Sujet.” Then working for the Cultural Services of the French Embassy in the United States, I was invited to author a chapter on American television for the book dedicated to Television and Power edited by French author and academic Dominique Wolton.

This was the occasion to work with one of the professors I had truly admired as a student, Francis Balle, who oversaw the series.

My chapter mentions the increasing role of reality tv to impose a brand, citing the impressive success of The Apprentice. 2000 was still a little too early to imagine that this show would become one of the foundations of Donald Trump’s successful run for the White House.
